Our Habitat Creation Services
Artificial Hollow Carving: Create long-lasting hollows in live trees using specialist tools. Ideal for possums, parrots, microbats and other cavity-dependent species.
Habitat Log Installation: Repurpose safe stumps or fallen timber into ground-level habitat logs for ground-dwelling fauna and invertebrates.
Nest Box Placement: Supply and install a range of nest boxes tailored for birds, bats and small mammals in locations where carved hollows aren’t viable.
Stag & Snag Creation: Transform selected dead or partially dead trees (“stags”) into wildlife habitat by retaining snags and carving hollows while ensuring public safety
Our Process
Site & Tree Assessment
Inspect tree health, species, diameter and structural soundness.
Select appropriate locations for hollows or boxes, considering wildlife corridors and client needs.
Service Design & Planning
Determine optimal hollow dimensions, entrance size and placement based on target species.
Choose between Hollow Hog carving, precision chainsaw work or nest-box installation.
Tool Setup & Safety
Use the Hollow Hog mechanical boring tool for minimal-impact internal carving.
Employ specialist chainsaws with carving bars and hand-tools (chisels, augers) for face-plate and finishing work.
Adhere to WHS standards: harnesses or EWP for elevated work, exclusion zones below, and personal protective equipment.
Habitat Creation
Carve or install on-site, retaining at least 30% of wood thickness around hollows to preserve structural integrity.
Sanitize all tools before and after use to prevent disease spread.
Clean debris and, if needed, drill small drain holes to prevent water pooling.
Post-Installation Inspection
Conduct a follow-up visit within 3–6 months, then annually or after major weather events.
Check tree health, cavity condition and evidence of wildlife use.
Perform any maintenance (e.g. clearing debris, re-trimming entrance, securing face-plates).
Benefits of Habitat Creation
For Wildlife
Provides immediate nesting and roosting sites for species such as brushtail possums, sugar gliders, Tasmanian pygmy possums, green rosellas, sulphur-crested cockatoos, swift parrots, microbats and more.
Tailored hollow size and entrance dimensions increase occupancy rates.
Supports breeding cycles and boosts local biodiversity.
For Tree Health
Mimics natural hollows without compromising long-term vitality.
Proper carving techniques promote wound occlusion and compartmentalisation.
Ongoing monitoring ensures early detection of decay or structural issues.
For Property Owners & Councils
Enhances aesthetic and ecological value of landscapes and reserves.
Demonstrates proactive stewardship for wildlife and urban green spaces.
Reduces risk by integrating habitat creation with safety pruning and stump management.
Meets community and legislative expectations for environmental best practice.
